An annual Dot inspection is a series of tests that ensure the commercial vehicle is safe and compliant with the federal motor carrier administration (FMCSA) standards.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that the following commercial vehicles undergo a periodic inspection every 12 months, including:
- Commercial motor Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more.
- Vehicles that transport 16 or more passengers, (including the driver)
- Trucks and motor carriers that transport hazardous materials
- Passenger or school buses
- Fire extinguisher minimum rating of 5 BC. should be securely mounted
- Three emergency reflective triangles
- Spare fuses
Other equipment that can be helpful to have in a truck include:
- First aid kit
- LED flashlight
- Road flares
- Tool kit
- Extra fluids
- Road atlas/navigation system
- Jumper cables/jump starter
- Spill response kits
- Snow brush and ice scraper
- Window breaker

The original or a copy of the inspection report must be kept for 14 months from the date of the inspection
Typically, a full DOT annual inspection takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.
